4 Types of Shingles

October 20, 2021

There are numerous types of roof shingles you can choose from to install on your home. Each one has different benefits, costs, materials, and styles. As you choose the next shingles for your home, there are a few things you need to consider. For instance, a new shingled roof is a big investment, so you’ll want to check the cost of installing specific roof shingle types as well as the lifespan you can expect from each type. Express Roofing is here to discuss some of your options. Learn more and contact us today!

Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles are the most popular roofing material currently used by homeowners and roofing service providers across the United States. There are various types of asphalt shingles, all of which are easy to install, accessible, and budget-friendly. The cost and lifespan of asphalt shingles allow us to compare them favorably with other competing roof types. Developed to protect your home from adverse weather and moisture, they require minimal maintenance and come in hundreds of styles and colors.

Architectural Shingles

Also referred to as laminated or dimensional shingles, architectural shingles are among the best quality roofing products. They are composed of a heavy fiberglass mat base and ceramic-coated mineral granules that are tightly embedded in carefully refined, water-resistant asphalt. These characteristics make the architectural shingles more durable and they tend to last longer than other types. In the right conditions, you can expect them to last thirty years or more.

Wood

Wooden roof shingles are produced from different types of wood that are split into thin sections. There are two style options for wooden roofs called wood shake or wood shingles. Wood shingles are cut into perfect shapes while wood shakes are sawn off and hand-split to give them a more rustic look. Depending on the type of wood that’s used and how it’s treated, wood shingles can last anywhere between 15 and 50 years.

Metal

Metal roof shingles are stylish in appearance and include multiple color options to select from. Metal shingles are relatively easy to install since they are light, which makes them a superb option for homes with a roof system that simply cannot support heavier types of materials. The metal options can last between 75 to 100 years and have one of the longest life spans compared to other roof types.
